The Cephalopod Coffeehouse: Meeting Four

As I actually read more than one book this month picking the best one is a hard call.  A very hard call, so I will just say they are all the best since it's a series.  I finally got off my lazy butt and went to the actual book store at the end of July as we were going away and I wanted something new and shiny to read on the train.

I was going to get 'The Ocean At The End Of The Lane' because I have been hearing fantastic things about it all around but I was wondering around in the fantasy section as I have been known to do on occasion.  And I got into a chat with another patron regarding George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Fire and Ice' series (which I had not read yet).

It has on my list for a while, really it has, because it has come highly recommend from a lot of people who I trust about these things.  But I haven't had time for reading lately.  However, as I said, I was going on vacation, so based on the insistence of a random stranger in Indigo I picked up the first four books and started in.

Well....30 days later I am halfway through the fourth book, because wow.  The writing is incredible, it really gets to your imagination.  I had to stop reading before bed because I started having nightmares.  I haven't had that happen in a very long time.  Maybe since 'Cujo' and I was pretty young when I read that.

I had only watch one episode of Game of Thrones before reading the books, and I am glad because the books are so much better.  And that is saying a lot because the show is pretty fantastic.  I have now sat down and watched the first half of the first season and I love it.

Still though if you like that sort of thing read the books. (not before bed if you are squeamish like me)

  1. I just fixed your link on the bloghop - you had a comma in place of one period. Sorry I didn't catch it sooner.

I haven't read any of Martin's books or seen the show yet. I fear this is costing me geek cred. I should probably get on that.

    1. Thank you for fixing it. This is what I get for the constant state of sleepy.

I was being told by so many people that I would love it so I took the plunge and so far it has paid off. Unlike other things.

  2. This is a great series, and you're right that the show is great as well. I admit though that I haven't yet read past book 3. I need to really start from scratch so I can refresh my memory.

    1. I bet it's one of those things that will be even better when read a second time.

  3. I haven't read the books but have watched some episodes on the TV although, like you, I have to pick my times to watch them otherwise I will have nightmares when I go to sleep.
